A Reddit user claiming to know the person/people behind the recent Bitfinex hacking incident has offered to give away some of the stolen bitcoins to a lucky user. However, fellow Redditors are sceptical about the claims made by this person going by the username /u/rekcahxfb.
The username rekcahxfb is BFX hacker spelt backwards and his ‘charitable’ offer is questionable as many believe it to be an attempt to launder the ill-gotten bitcoins. According to the OP, those who want to take part in this giveaway ‘campaign’ will have to post their bitcoin wallet addresses in the comments section. One among those will then be chosen and the bitcoin worth about $566630 will be transferred to that address.
In the pretext of the content, the user may enter his/her own bitcoin address along with other legitimate wallet addresses and claim that the lucky wallet was his own. This way, the person, if he is indeed the hacker or one with connections to the hacker can transfer the stolen bitcoin to his own wallet. Once he receives the bitcoin to his own address, he can claim that he got lucky and attempt to either liquidate or spend the stolen bitcoin.
Some people also believe that the hacker may be testing the waters with this initial giveaway game. Even if the hacker decides to transfer the 1000 bitcoins to some legitimate bitcoin user, he will do it to see the results. If the recipient doesn’t get into trouble, then he may continue offering 1000 BTCs and choose an address belonging to him as the lucky one. This way he will be able to launder the whole stash of stolen Bitfinex bitcoins.
Or, the whole giveaway game is a big hoax where somebody is trying to have fun at the cost of Bitfinex victims.
