- The company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, announced this target in a New Year’s message to shareholders.
Metaplanet, a trailblazer in Japan’s crypto industry and a significant corporate holder of Bitcoin, has revealed its intention to increase its Bitcoin treasury to 10,000 BTC within the next four years.
The announcement was made by CEO Simon Gerovich in a New Year’s message to the company’s shareholders.
Record-Breaking Expansion
Simon Gerovich highlighted 2024 as a transformative year for the company, with record-breaking expansion of its Bitcoin treasury and the establishment of its position as a leading Bitcoin Treasury Company in Asia.
The plan to expand the Bitcoin treasury is a continuation of Metaplanet’s consistent accumulation of Bitcoin (BTC) throughout 2024.
Over the course of the year, the company’s Bitcoin holdings increased from 225.611 BTC in July to 1,761.98 BTC by the end of December.
Strategic Funding and Commitment
This growth was strategically financed through capital market activities, including two significant bond issuances in December.
The company’s dedication to cryptocurrency deepened when it officially became a Bitcoin Treasury Company on December 18, 2024. This transition was immediately followed by the acquisition of an additional 619.70 BTC.
In 2024, the company’s average cost for Bitcoin acquisition rose from 9,972,933 yen to 11,846,002 yen.
Despite these substantial holdings, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin treasury is still modest compared to industry leader MicroStrategy’s 444,262 BTC.
Simon Gerovich’s vision for 2025 is not just about accumulating more Bitcoin. The strategy also includes improving shareholder transparency, expanding global partnerships to promote Bitcoin adoption, and strengthening Metaplanet’s position within Japan’s cryptocurrency ecosystem.
The ambitious target of 10,000 BTC represents almost a sixfold increase from the current holdings. This could potentially position Metaplanet higher in the rankings of corporate Bitcoin holders, which currently includes notable companies such as Marathon Digital, Riot Platforms, and Tesla.
