Consensys, the developer behind Metamask, has launched the Linea Association. This Switzerland-based non-profit is committed to promoting the decentralization of its Layer-2 zkEVM Linea. The announcement was made at the Devcon event in Bangkok, Thailand, on November 13.
Linea Association’s Mission and Governance
As per the Linea’s blogpost, the Linea Association is an independent Swiss non-profit. It is dedicated to advancing Linea’s open-source decentralized technology and ecosystem governance. One of the main initiatives of the Linea Association is tokenholder governance. This is why the organization is planning to launch its native token, LINEA, by the end of Q1 2025. The LINEA token will be used by holders to participate in governance.
The blogpost indicates that there will be a token generation event. This event will launch LINEA tokens for ecosystem contributors. Further details about the token’s design, economics, and utility will be provided by the Linea Association. It is hinted that LINEA may serve more than just a governance token over time.
The Swiss Association will empower token holders to make decisions on certain aspects within the organization. These include Linea intellectual property and a treasury to support its mission. The organization will have a board of directors, a general assembly employees working under an executive director, and a token governance body.
Nicolas Liochan, Founder of Linea and member of the Board of the Linea Association, emphasized that decentralization is at the heart of Linea’s vision. He believes Linea should be owned and governed openly by a community, not a centralized base. He stated that the establishment of the Linea Association ensures that the protocol’s future is in the hands of its community. This allows users and developers to shape its trajectory collaboratively and transparently.
Liochon explained that the organization’s core mission is to “empower the world to live on-chain.” This will be supported by an ecosystem of Ethereum technologists, builders, and users.
Joseph Lubin, Consensys’ CEO, stressed that the formation of Linea’s independent NGO aligns with Consensys’ vision. This vision involves creating a Network State powered by a decentralized global economy. Lubin said that initiatives like Linea are building the foundation for an open, collaborative, and censorship-resistant world. This allows individuals and communities globally to participate fully and securely.
Since its launch in August 2023, Linea has become the fastest-growing zkEVM on Ethereum. It has hosted more than 230 million transactions in less than 15 months. Linea is currently in the first phase of its decentralization roadmap, which consists of five phases, from Phase 0 to Phase 4.
